Admonish

At the bar, I could easily become invisible. Everyone was used to the shy type, standing alone, not talking to anyone. I sipped my lemonade vodka and glanced at the pink hippo logo, laying down and smiling, one hand underneath its head. Still waiting for her own drink, Trilce leaned against the bar and watched the crowd as it grew larger. One of the drag queens stepped toward us. She was wearing a tiara and a silver dress that looked like a hundred seashells. The bartender handed her a green drink. She saw me staring and winked as she took a sip and walked away.

“She winked at me,” I was surprised she even noticed me.

“Alondra?” Trilce asked. “Yeah, she’s nice.”

“You come here a lot?”

“Yeah. Here I don’t have to shoo off every man in the vicinity. I heard this is the largest dance floor in the whole state. If only the bartender would see me,” she raised her voice in another attempt to get his attention.

“Is Shane gonna perform tonight too?”

Ben showed up and put his empty glass on the bar. Wearing a sports jacket and button-down shirt, he stood out from the crowd of tees and see-through shirts.

“Would you like another drink?” he asked me.

“Thanks.” I shook my head. “I can’t believe they forced you to come to a gay club.”

Ben didn’t reply. He noticed Trilce standing next to me. “And what is the lady having?”

“The lady,” Trilce sounded as if she was ready to bite his face off. But then she turned around, looked Ben up and down and finished her sentence, “Would have whatever you’re having,” her voice turning flirty.

“Gin and tonic it is,” he smiled. “I’m Ben.”

“Trilce.”

His smile widened as he showed his index finger to the bartender. He took Ben’s order immediately.

“He saw you,” Trilce remarked loud enough for the bartender to hear. “As if by a miracle,” she emphasized.

“I guess some people are just blind to perfection,” Ben replied.

We clinked our glasses together. In a crowd of gay men, somehow the only straight guy and girl managed to find each other. They even took a liking in one another. Before we had a chance to say anything, the saxophone loop began to shake the floor in a melody we all recognized: Problem.

“Oh my God, I love this song,” she announced.

It was Ariana Grande.

“Would you like to dance?” Ben asked her.

“Yeah.” She pulled my hand.

“I don’t dance,” I yanked my hand out of hers, then realized I’d overreacted.

She looked at her drink that was about to topple. “What, never?”

I shook my head.

She paused for a second, deliberating if she should ask. But she realized the song wasn’t going to stop for a discussion. “OK, Ben. It’s just you and me then. Make it count.” She gave me the side eye.

Ben started dancing with more swagger than any of the gay patrons. Trilce had moves too.

Not far away, Cliff was dancing next to Mason and his newest boyfriend: some twink with short blond hair, who was wearing, of all things, sunglasses.
